The Methuen Amateur Theatre Handbook

The Methuen Amateur Thatre Handbook (published on 24th January) describes itself as "The essential handbook for anyone involved in amateur dramatics" and it is true to say that every aspect of the amateur theatre world is covered.

Keith Arrowsmith, a solicitor and experienced amateur producer, has gathered together a team of contributors (including, it has to be said, me!) who between them have expertise in 29 different subject areas:

Performance

Performing in Schools
Performance by Youth Groups
Performing in churches
Open-air performances
Performing at festivals

Management

Amateur theatre groups
Making decisions
Seeking advice
Keeping records
Liability of members and officers
Insurance
Fund-raising
Tax
Closure

The Show

The budget
The production team
The script and the rules of copyright
Freedom of expression
The actors
Children
Musicians
Animals
Rehearsal and performance venues
Public entertaininment licensing
Marketing
Health and safety
Stage management
Sound effects and music
Front of House
Accessibility

Reference

Legal glossary
Further reading
Useful addresses
Index of statutes and regulations

At 290 pages it is a very comprehensive guide and one which even those experienced in the amateur theatre will find useful. There is an associated website, www.athb.co.uk, which will carry updates and new information.

As I am a contributor, it would be improper for me to review it, but I can and do recommend it. My contribution, incidentally, is the Performing in Schools section.

Published by Methuen at £12.99 (paperback). ISBN 0-413-75570-3
