Dark Materials Casting Announced
Some of the casting for the National Theatre's stage version of His Dark Materials, Philip Pullmans's children's trilogy of novels, has been announced. Timothy Dalton is to play Lord Asriel, Patricia Hodge Mrs Coulter, and Niamh Cusack Serafina Pekkala. The production is in two parts and opens on 20th December (previews from 4th).

Rigby Returns
Terence Rigby is to return to the UK stage in a production of Pinter's The Caretaker at Bristol Old Vic. Directed by Lindsay Posner, the play opens on 9th September and runs to 27th. It is currently in preview.

Dickson Joins Fame for Christmas
Barbara Dickson is to join the cast of the West End revival of Fame for the Christmas period, from 18th December to 10th January. She will play teacher Miss Sherman.

"New" Christie Play Discovered
A hitherto unknown Agatha Christie play, The Secret of Chimneys, a spy thriller written in 1925, has been discovered in the British Library and is to premiere in Calgary, Canada, in October.

Baxendale to Star in Marber Strindberg Reworking
Helen baxendale is to star in the Donmar production of Patrick Marber's After Miss Julie, a reworking of the Strindberg play Miss Julie, at the Donmar later this year. Directed by Michael Grandage, the production opens on 25th November (previews from 20th) and runs until 7th February. Marber's version sets the classic story in 1945 on the even of Labour's landslide election win.

From Pericles to Woyzeck
Cardboard Citizens, the theatre company that works with the homeless and which has recently done a joint production of Pericles with the RSC, is to perform their version of Woyzeck at the Riverside Studios from 30th September to 11th October. They will then take the show on tour around theatres, hostels and day centres nationwide from 14th October to 30th November.

Electra Casting
More casting has been announced for the RNT production of O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra, which opens at the Lyttelton on 27th November (previews from 17th). The cast will now inlucde Helen Mirren, Eve Best, Clarke Peters, Paul McGann, Paul Hilton and Sean McGinley.

Cast Changes for Chicago
Frances Ruffelle, Anita Dobson and Paul Baker are to join the cast of Chicago from 8th September, playing Roxie, Mama Morton and Amos respectively, whilst former Backstreet Boys singer Kevin Richardson will play Billy Flynn from 22nd November for six weeks. He formerly played the role on Broadway.

Fringe Success Transfers to Stratford East
The People Next Door, one of the successes of this year's Edinburgh Fringe, given four stars by BTG reviewer Philip Fisher, is to transfer to the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, from 10th September.
