ACE's Annual Review: Highlights

These are some of the highlights of last year which ACE itself picks out.

April 1999
Channel Theatre Company receives a lottery award to buy and refurbish a rehearsal and workshop base in Thanet. The company provides small-scale touring nationwide and education workshops for local communities and schools. It has also received money from the European Regional Development Fund, for its role in regeneration.

June 1999
We announce our new financial strategy and new structure, to come into place in November. A Parliamentary Select Committee acknowledges that the Arts Council has undergone a ‘radical transformation in its composition’, and that the Secretary of State’s appointment of Gerry Robinson has ‘already proved to be a sound decision’.

August 1999
The picturesque Theatre by the Lake opens in Keswick-on-Derwentwater, with support from a lottery award. It’s the last new repertory theatre to be built in this country in the 20th century.

October 1999
We brief the Regional Arts Boards, our regularly-funded organisations and recipients of lottery awards, about the need to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. Through papers and seminars, we suggest actions that arts organisations could take to be ready for 2004, when arts providers will have to take reasonable steps to provide access.

2001
Billy Elliot, premiered autumn 2000, was one of the last films we backed before responsibility for film funding transferred to the new Film Council in April 2000. Set during the 1984 miners' strike, the film tells the story of a young boy who finds dancing helps him cope with his mother's death. The film is the directorial debut of Stephen Daldry, former artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre in London.
