The RSC Performance DatabaseDateline: 6th June, 2004With next to no fanfare or public announcement, a major new theatre database went online last month. The RSC Performance Database, hosted by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust website, is a superb new resource for both the researcher and the enthusiastic theatergoer. Want to know how many performances of Romeo and Juliet there have been by the RSC or its predecessors since 1882? Simple! Just click on Search RSC Data - Plays, follow the instructions and not only will you discover that there have been 61, you can see basic details of each one. Next, select the one you are interested in (say the 1882 production), and you'll be taken to a full cast list, where you will discover, for example, that Virginia Bateman played Juliet. Click on her name and you'll discover that she actually appeared in eighteen different plays with the company, and you can then click on any one for more details. You'll find that she twice (1881 and 1882) played Lydia Languish in The Rivals, and you can click on them to get the full cast list. Dates of the first performance are also given. You can do the same by searching for individual actors, directors or designers. It's a fascinating resource, which is not only valuable but extremely easy to use. And what's more, it's free!
