The Best Theatre Websites

Dateline: 7th July, 2002

Every year since 1997 I have written articles about theatre websites: the good and the bad, the useful and useless, the well designed and those which look to have been thrown together by a spider on LSD. Now we begin a search for the best theatre website.

In fact, we're looking for the best three theatre websites: a site for an actor or actress, a site for a theatre company and a site for a theatre.

Although these three types of sites have different functions, they can all be judged by the same criteria:

  • Usefulness: does the site provide a good quantity of useful information?
  • Good design: is the site easy to read? is the information it holds easily accessible? is it good to look at? Are graphics and images useful, or do they just slow down viewing the site?
  • Good navigation: is it easy to find your way around the site, to backtrack if required, to find the information you need?
  • Speed: is it quick to download, or does it make watching paint dry seem exciting?

Any British theatre site which fits into one of the three categories is eligible. It doesn't matter if the company is professional or amateur; if the actor or actress is world famous or just starting their career; if the theatre is known internationally or just known in its immediate locality.

You are invited to nominate sites for any or all of the categories.

To nominate a site, all you need do is send an email to peter@britishtheatreguide.info with the word "Nomination" in the subject line. Those whose email programs support it can click on the link above and their program will open up with the address and subject lines already filled in.

Nominations should be submitted by midnight on Sunday 21st July (GMT). The five nominees in each category which get the most nominations will go through to the final round and a poll will be started on Sunday 28th July.

Please remember: we are interested in the best sites, not the best actors, companies or theatres.

To avoid confusion - if they are nominated - we will treat the Royal National Theatre as a theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company as a company, even though both could be considered to be both!
