Theatre in Southern England: Introduction

Dateline: 8th April, 2001

The area covered by Southern Arts, the RAB of this week's survey, is Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, and Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch in South East Dorset. The rest of Dorset is in the South West Arts area.

It is a very diverse region, stretching from southern Wiltshire (predominantly rural) to the suburbs of South London, taking in the "home" of the Royal Navy, Plymouth, tourist areas such as Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight, and the city which houses the oldest university in the country, Oxford.

Theatre in the region did well out of the recent Arts Council announcement of extra funding:

  • The Haymarket, Basingstoke - £130,000
  • The Watermill, Newbury - £60,000
  • Pegasus Theatre, Oxford - £95,000
  • Oxford Playhouse - £200,000
  • Oxfordshire Touring Theatre Company - £90,000
  • Poole Arts Centre - £100,000
  • New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth - £30,000
  • Salisbury Playhouse - £340,000
  • Salisbury Arts Centre - £25,000
  • Nuffield Theatre, Southampton - £125,000
  • The Gantry, Southampton - £75,000
  • Sixth Sense Theatre Company, Swindon - £30,000
  • Theatre Royal, Winchester - £30,000

The RAB has also set aside £30,000 to establish an international theatre summer school in the region, which will allow those working in theatre to develop new skills and ideas, make links with colleagues in this country and overseas and draw on expertise from within the region and outside. Partnerships with universities and colleges will bring an academic aspect to the more practical activities.
