Theatre in Southern England: Parts of DorsetOnly part of Dorset is in the Southern Arts area; the rest comes under the umbrella of South West Arts. However there are only three towns under the wing of SA which have any real theatre provision: Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Bournemouth's provision is impressive - the smallest auditorium seats 835 people! - and features not one, but two national touring houses. The first of these is the Pavilion Theatre which has two auditoria, the Theatre itself (1518 seats) and the Pavilion Ballroom (950). The other, the Pier Theatre, which, as its name suggests, is situated at the end of the pier, is the smallest venue in the town. It is only open from May to October, presenting a summer season and Sunday concerts. The largest venue in the town is the Bournemouth International Centre, which takes only large scale events. Its two auditoria are the Windsor Hall (3500) and the Tregonwell Hall (1000). The other two entertainment venues in the town do not concern themselves with drama: the Opera House (1000) features only music and dance, whilst the Winter Gardens (1818) is a concert hall. Christchurch's Regent Centre (main house 480, studio 80) is an arts centre, presenting a mixed programme, as is Poole's Arts Centre (also available for hire). It has two auditoria, the Wessex Hall seating 1473 and the Towngate Theatre (669). Finally Poole's Jellicoe Theatre (140) is situated in the Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education and presents six small-scale professional tours a year, plus twelve college and youth theatre productions. It also has a Saturday morning children's theatre.
