Theatre in Southern England: The Isle of WightFor such a small area, the Isle of Wight has a surprising amount of theatre provision. Newport has the Apollo Theatre (132), which is the home of a local amateur company but also takes the occasional professional touring production. The Medina Theatre, an arts centre, is much larger at 420 seats, and it sees its role as "to complement the work of the other theatres on the island" and so provides a "balanced programme of arts and entertainment", both professional and amateur. Also in Newport is the Quay Arts Centre (135 seats), which offers small-scale concerts, dance and drama. The Ryde Theatre (in Ryde) is part of a multi-purpose centre and offers nine months of professional work, with the rest of the year being given over to amateur theatre. It aims to offer a wide range of events in its 502-seater auditorium. The island also has its own professional producing theatre, the Shanklin Theatre in the town of Shanklin. It concentrates on providing a summer season for the island residents and the many tourists, and, at other times, is available for amateur use. Finally there is the Winter Gardens in Ventnor (400 seats), which concentrates mainly on community projects but also tries to provide a varied programme of entertainment.
