Theatre in Southern England: Wiltshire

There are only three towns in Wiltshire which have professional theatre provision - Devizes, Salisbury and Swindon - and, of them, the largest concentration is in Salisbury.

Best known nationally is the Salisbury Playhouse, a producing theatre, which has two auditoria: the Main House seats 517 and the Salberg Studio 149. It is interested in new work and work for younger audiences. Its own productions go in the main house and others - small-scale tours, for instance - in the studio.

The largest venue in the town is the City Hall (953 seats), a multi-purpose centre which is available for hire. The smallest is the Studio Theatre, which seats just fifty and was created from two wooden huts. It is an amateur thatre.

Salisbury's two other venues are the Guildhall (200), which presents small-scale music, dance and drama, and the Salisbury Arts Centre (150) which offers a complete range of arts events.

Devizes' Wharf Theatre (96) is primarily amateur, producing one play a month from September through to June, with the theatre being available for hire at other times.

Swindon has the largest venue in the county, the Oasis Leisure Centre (1680 seats), which presents a "balanced community and entertainment programme". At aproximately a third of its size, the Wyvern Theatre (617), an arts centre, aims to produce the best of professional arts and an extensive community programme.

Finally, the Swindon Arts centre (220) takes small-scale professional touring companies and also caters for local clubs and societies.
