The Biggest Theatrical Disaster of the Year!

Dateline: 8th December, 2002

Was the RSC's decision to leave the Barbican the biggest theatrical disaster of the year? After all, it was a major contributor to the addition £1m deficit which the company now faces.

Or was the biggest disaster the merging of ACE and the Regional Arts Boards ? That cost £1.2m.

Or perhaps it's the state of the West End? SOLT said some weeks ago that it would cost £90m to get the West Ends theatres up to scratch, but, according to Really Useful Theatres chief executive Andre Ptaszynski, the cost will be £200m.

Or was it a production - like Romeo and Juliet - the Musical, said by one of the contributors to our Forum to be the funniest comedy in London?

Or perhaps it's the decision to cast Christine and Neil Hamilton in panto?

Or was it the incredibly rapid collapse of Entertainment Team (Durham) Ltd., the management of Durham's new Gala Theatre? The theatre opened in January and the operating company collapsed in May with debts of £690,000.

Or is it something else?

What would get your vote for this dubious accolade? Email me with your suggestions: we'll publish them all (unless they're libellous!).
