The Bernard Shaw CollectionDateline: 13th July, 2006To mark the 150th anniversary of George Bernard Shaw's birth, the BBC has had the splendid idea of releasing a special DVD collection consisting of ten adaptations of some of his most famous plays. It may take some time but the British Theatre Guide will review all ten, which together consist of 1,032 minutes of entertainment and retail at £99.99. George Bernard Shaw is currently somewhat out of fashion although there are still revivals of his best-known plays. As the BBC's publicity material so helpfully points out, he is a writer who should not be ignored since he was "a cultural icon and the leading playwright of his time". For those who are fans and also newcomers to his work, the BBC is providing a wonderful service by presenting adaptations featuring actors of the quality of Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Helena Bonham Carter in versions of the plays screened between 1972 and 1989. With so many riches, to choose from it is hard to know where to start and rather than plunging in at the beginning and ploughing through in order, it is rather fun to pick plays according to mood and also the available time.
