Theatre in Southern England: Dorset

This feature covers all parts of Dorset except the south east (mainly Bournemouth and Poole), which is under the umbrella of Southern Arts and was covered in last week's feature.

Blandford is the home of Bryanston School, and the Bryanston Arts Centre was built to serve both the school and the local community. Ninety percent of its programme is professional work (small- and mid-scale tours) and ten percent is amateur.

In Bridgport the Arts Centre presents a mixed programme in its 200-seater auditorium, as does the Dorchester Arts Centre, although its performance space is much smaller, seating just eighty.

Ferndown's Barrington Theatre is a 280 seat community centre. It is interested in popular entertainment and specifies any form of music, dance or drama by professional groups, It is also open to use by community and amateur groups.

The seaside town of Lyme Regis has its Marine Theatre (200 seats), which is available for hire and is used a lot by local amateur societies.

Shaftesbury has the Shaftesbury School Chapel Arts Centre (120 seats), which is interested in drama which appeals to a teenage audience.

Sherborne, although not the largest town in the county, has two venues. One is the Powell Theatre (220 seats), part of Sherborne School, which presents a varied programme of small-scale touring productions, and, of course, school productions. It is not used during school holidays. The other venue in the town is Sherborne Artslink, a community arts center with an auditorium seating 300. It promotes what it calls a "limited" number of theatre and drama productions.

Swanage has the Mowlem Theatre (403), which is available for hire. Most of the events it hosts are sponsored by local organisations.

Finally there is Weymouth, another seaside resort. Its Pavilion Complex is an arts, entertainments and conference centre which hosts a wide ranging programme which includes amateur productions. It has two performance spaces: the Theatre seats 1000 whilst the Ocean Room will take 400.
