Theatre in Southern England: Somerset

Somerset - the summer country. Home of mysticism and Arthurian legend. Not, however, a major theatre centre, although that is hardly surprising, for Somerset, like many of the south west counties, is predominantly rural.

There are two national touring houses in the county, in Weston-super-Mare and Yeovil, the only two towns in the county which have more than one theatre venue. Both are of a similar size, with Weston's Playhouse just having the edge - 685 seats as against Yeovil's Octagon at 652. Yeovil's second theatre is the Swan (142) an amateur theatre, whilst Weston-super-Mare has the Winter Gardens Pavilion, which is mainly a concert hall but is open to any form of music, dance or drama. There are two auditoria: the Ballroom seats 550 and the Prince Consort Hall 300.

Bridgwater (that's correct - no "e") has its Arts Centre which presents a mixed programme in its 196-seater performance space, whilst Frome's Merlin Theatre, also an arts centre, seats 240. On the campus of Frome Community College, it presents small- and mid-scale tours as well as community events.

Minehead's Regal Theatre (410) concentrates mainly on popular entertainment, but it does have some theatre in its programme, and the David Hall Arts Centre (100) in South Petherton features theatre in its programme.

Street's Strode Theatre is also an arts centre, seating 393, and it presents a wide variety of events and is particularly interested in arts education.

Finally, Taunton has the Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre (352 seats), which is 80% professional touring shows and 20% amateur.
