Theatre in Yorkshire and Humberside: Introduction

Dateline: 18th February, 2001

The largest of England's ten regions, Yorkshire and Humberside covers the counties of North, West and South Yorkshire and what used to be the county of Humberside. About one tenth of the population of England lives in the region - five million - roughly the population of Denmark.

Three major cities - Bradford, Leeds and Sheffield - house 35% of the entire region's population, but there are others which, although not so large in terms of population, are certainly significant. Amongs these is York itself.

Unlike the other cities in the region, York is a major tourist centre. Amongst its many attractions are the ancient city walls, the Jorvic Centre which celebrates England's Viking heritage, the National Railway Museum, and, of course, York Minster, one of the most impressive and beautiful cathedrals in the country. In the Church of England, the Archbishop of York is second only to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

York is also the home of the York Mystery Plays, the great body of liturgical drama from the Middle Ages.

Yorkshire has played host to many TV series over the years: at present there are Heartbeat and the soap Emmerdale, and of course there's also that favourite of more than 25 years, Last of the Summer Wine.
