Theatres in HumbersideHull Hull is undoubtedly the theatre capital of Humberside, with three theatres, one a producing theatre with a world-wide reputation. Hull Truck Theatre is the theatre of John Godber, former drama teacher turned actor, director and - most famously of all - writer. It is of a modest size (300 seats) for a theatre with such a reputation, but of course the resident company does tour widely and Godber's plays (amongst them Teechers, Bouncers and Up 'n' Under) are staples of small professional companies, amateur societies and youth theatres throughout the UK. Also in Hull are the New Theatre, a receiving house with 1189 seats, and the Donald Ray Theatre, part of the University of Hull, which presents twelve university shows and four or five professional productions per annum in its 180 seat auditorium. Other Humberside Venues The seaside town of Bridlington has its Leisure World leisure centre which has a 700-seater auditorium which is occasionally used for theatre, whilst Goole's The Gate arts centre has a programme of live events in its 100-seater auditorium from September to June. In the north of the county, the Pocklington Civic (200), another arts centre, has a mixed programme, and, in the south, Scunthorpe's Plowright Theatre (353 seats) devotes one third of the year to small-scale touring shows, the rest of the year being taken up by amateur companies.
