Theatre in Eastern England: BedfordshireBedford itself, the county town, has two theatre venues. The Civic Theatre is mainly amateur, but is available for professional hire, and seats 289. Much bigger is the Corn Exchange which does have some self-promoted events but which is mainly also available for hire. It has three auditoria: the Corn Exchange itself has 858 seats, the Harpur Suite 160 and the Howard Room 126. Dunstable's civic centre, the Queensway Hall, is also large, seating 900, and, although it does promote its own children's shows, is mainly available for hire. Leighton Buzzard (one of the many things the East England area is famous for is its interesting range of place names: for instance, Steeple Bumpstead, Steeple Morden, Six Mile Bottom) has the Leighton Buzzard Theatre, a 170-seater, which has a mixed programme which includes small-scale tours, amateur productions and children's shows. Although its postal address is Bedfordshire (shortened to Beds.), Luton is a unitary authority. That is, it is not administratively part of the county but has its own controlling council. It has two theatrical spaces: the Artezium Arts and Media Centre takes small-scale national and regional tours and has two auditoria, one seating 100, the other 96; and the Library Theatre (238 seats) is very precise about its programming. Ten percent of the year is given over to professional work, fifty percent amateur and forty percent film.
