Carnival Masks of Venice

By J C Brown
Artists' and Photographers' Press Ltd £16.99
96 pages

Dateline: 19th October, 2008

We must start by saying that this is not a book about theatre: it is about the masks which are such a feature of the Carnivale di Venezia. But it does have a theatrical appeal, especially for those whio have an interest in the Commedia dell'Arte and in theatre design.

It is a book of photographs, stunning pictures of carnival masks and the costumes of the wearers. After a short (slightly less than four pages) introduction to the Carnivale and to mask-making, and before three pages of technical data about the photographs, we are treated to a selection of pictures of the masks and costumes being worn in Venetian locations. Sometimes one mask alone is the subject, sometmes a number appear in one picture and sometimes the photographer focuses on a detail of mask, costume of accessory. Each picture is sharp, colourful and clear, carefully composed not only to show every intricate detail but also to create a mood appropriate to the mask or masks.

For those who use masks in theatre or those who design extravgant or period costumes, it is a treasure trove of ideas and should find a place on their bookshelves. Although not intended as such, theatre designers will find it a rich source of ideas and the general reader cannot but marvel at the craftsmanship, indeed artistry, of the mask makers.
