Test Your Shakespearean Knowledge

Dateline: 23rd December, 2004

BTG reviewer J.D. Atkinson has compiled this quiz to test your knowledge of Shakespeare. Have a go and see how you do. My response to most questions was "Well, I recognise them but I can't think of the play." In other words, I failed! Can you do better?

None of the following people actually appear in Shakespeare's plays - they are merely mentioned in passing. Can you identify the works in which each group of three names appear?

1) Cicely Hacket, Troilus the spaniel and Sugarsop

2) Numa, Hob and Dick

3) King Cophetua, Zenelophon and Queen Guinevere

4) Herod of Jewry, Pansa and Apollodorus

5) Nedar, Antiopa, Cadmus

6) Tarquin, Sweno and Bellona

7) Sibylla, Scylla and Medea

8) Hecate, Child Roland and Nero

9) Sir Smile, the Emperor of Russia and Apollo

10) King Stephen, Barbary and Saint Peter

11) Prester John, the Duchess of Milan and the Great Cham

12) Pyrrhus, Gonzago and Saint Valentine

13) Ovid, Jane Smile and Gargantua

14) Tarquin, Cato and Lucius Pella

15) Mistress Mall, Pigrogromitus and King Gorboduc

16) Monsieur Veroles, the poor Transylvanian and Philoten

17) Aristotle, Thetis and Perseus

18) Saint Stephen, Philomel and Cornelia

19) Kate Keepdown, Lusty Pudding and Master Copperspur

20) Sycorax, Claribel and Dido

21) Rosaline, Livia and Laura

22) Alice Shortcake, Sackerson the bear and Mother Prat

23) Cassibelan, Euriphile and Lud
