Theatre in the East Midlands: IntroductionDateline: 25th February, 2001 The area covered by the East Midlands Arts Board is the counties of Derbyshire (excluding High Peak), Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Until 1999, responsibility for Lincolnshire was shared with Eastern Arts, and the High Peak area of Derbyshire is still under the aegis of North Western Arts. The area has a population of four million and has the highest figure in the UK for participation in the arts. There are twenty local arts development agencies across the region providing a wide range of participatory arts activities for their communities. There are no highly industrialised areas, although, of course, at one time the Nottinghamshire Coalfield was one of the biggest in the UK. Much of the area is rural and it has the distinction of possessing the smallest county in England, Rutland. NEXT>> Derbyshire Articles Indices: |
