Theatre in DerbyshireDerby itself, the county town, has three theatre venues. The Assembly Rooms, a civic centre, is large, with 1742 seats in the Great Hall and 330 in the Darwin Suite, and they are quite open and honest about their policy - anything that will put bums on seats! Hence they have a very mixed programme. The Guildhall Theatre's programming is also very mixed, but it is a much smaller venue, having just 244 seats. Theatrically Derby is best known for its producing theatre, the Derby Playhouse, built as part of the great explosion of regional theatre from the mid-sixties to mid-seventies. It replaced an older theatre which had been built in 1952. Chesterfield has two theatrical venues. The Arts Centre, which has a very mixed programme, seats 200 in its Main Hall and 175 in the Recital Room. Its other venue is the Pomegranate Theatre. A touring house with 546 seats, it devotes 38 weeks of the year to touring productions, ten weeks to amateurs, twelve nights to one-night stands, and is dark for four weeks. The only other theatre venue of any size in the county is the Buxton Opera House, which is part of the High Peak region and was dealt with in our feature on theatre in the North Western Arts region.
