Theatre in LeicestershireThe Leicester Haymarket is another of those theatres built in the seventies. Seating 752 in the Main House and 120 in the Studio, it has a wide-ranging production policy - musicals, modern and classic drama, and new writing - and a high reputation. Leicester's other venue, Phoenix Arts, is an arts centre, and it, too has a good reputation for its commitment to theatre. It presents, inevitably, a mixed programme comprising all art forms, and its auditorium seats 262. In Loughborough there are two theatres. The Town Hall Theatre presents a variety of shows from one nighters to half a week and including 'professional' amateur companies and youth arts. There's a regular Comedy Club and next season they are to launch the 'ARC' (Acoustic Roots Club). The theatre has two auditoria: the Main House with 528 seats and the 350-seater Victoria Room. Loughborough University has its Sir Robert Martin Theatre which is used mainly for productions by students on their drama course, but also houses small-scale touring shows. Again there are two auditoria, the theatre itself (300 seats) and the studio (100). Another basically educational venue is the Melton Theatre in Melton Mowbray. Used by the local college of further education during the day, it does take local amateur shows and touring productions in the evenings. It seats 343. Finally in this survey of theatre provision in Leicestershire, we come to the Venture Theatre in Ashby de la Zouche. A 114-seater, four fifths of its output is from the resident amateur company, but it will take touring productions at other times. It does make it clear that it will not accept "offensive material", although what it means by that is not said. Introduction Articles Indices: |
