Theatre in Rutland

Rutland is the smallest country in England and possesses two theatres, both belonging to public schools but made available for public use.

The Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Oakham is part of Oakham School, although its use is far from being restricted to the school. Its job is "to serve the school and the local community" and, to that end, it puts on nine weeks of amateur preformances of various kinds and the rest of the year is devoted to a mixture of professional shows. The theatre holds 224.

The Uppingham Theatre, part of Uppingham School, works in a similar way. Its aim, it says, is to "supply classic and modern theatre to the school and the community." It has a capacity of 330.

Companies

For some reason, tracking down non-building-based companies in the EMA region has proved difficult. I am sure there must be more than I've come across, but they certainly seem to hide their lights under bushels!

Here are those that I have found!

Dead Mad Theatre Company
Based in Derbyshire. They have only been in existence a short while but, in their second production, they are expanding their numbers. They aim to produce both contemporary and classic theatre.

Meeting Ground Theatre Company
A multi-disciplinary company based in Nottingham. They use new and self-devised work, usually of a visual/non-scripted nature.

New Perspectives Theatre Company
Based in Mansfield, Notts. A very community-orientated group with a particular interest in rural audiences and in expanding access. They like new work and specialise in tailor-made community projects.

Reckless Sleepers
Based in Nottingham. They describe themselves as being innovative and experimental, and they "explore visual ideas in a theatre context."

Roundabout Theatre in Education
Strictly speaking Roundabout does not really belong in this section as it is based at the Nottingham Playhouse. However does not perform in the theatre, rather its work takes it out into the community.
