Theatre in South East England: Introduction

Dateline: 25th March, 2001

The area covered in this part of our survey - the area of South East Arts (SEA) - is the counties of East and West Sussex, Kent and Surrey, and the unitary authorities of Brighton and Hove, and Medway. In these pages we shall not be separating the unitary authorities from the counties of which they are a postal, if not an administrative, part.

The area's population is some four million. Surrey has a high population density but only three individual areas - Brighton and Hove (East Sussex), Guildford (Surrey) and Medway (Kent) - have populations over 100,000. The rest of the population is scattered among small communities on the coast and in the so-called Thames Corridor. The centre of the region is rural, with around 40 per cent being classified as Green Belt, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or some other designation with rural connotations.

On the southern part of the Kent coast, of course, are Dover and Folkestone, facing the Channel and the main setting-off point for trips to the continent by sea - and now, of course, via the Channel Tunnel.

Although there are no major national "players" in theatre in the region, the area has the highest business sponsorship of the arts outside of London, mainly because of the concentration of corporate headquarters here.

As in most of the other chapters of this series, we will look at theatre building provision in the region county by county, and then look at those theatre companies unattached to particular buildings on a separate page.
