Theatre in South East England: Surrey

Surrey possesses one full-scale professional producing theatre, Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud. Built in 1965, it has a main house which seats 590 and a studio, the Mill Studio, which accommodates 80. It does 14 weekly runs of its own productions and also takes tours. In fact, many of its productions go on tour themselves. The main house productions tend to be of a classic nature: contemporary work is catered for in the Mill Strudio.

Guildford has three other theatre venues: the Electric Theatre is an arts centre which presents a full range of theatre, both amateur and professional. It seats 210. The Guildford Civic is a receiving house, taking topline shows and tours. Its main hall seats 1150 and its studio 160. Finally, the University of Surrey has its own venue in the town: its Hall seats 200, the Dance Studio 120, and the Music Studio 220.

Elsewhere in the county, Camberley's Artslink Theatre is a multi-purpose venue, built in 1966, which presents a varied programme in its two performance spaces: the main house (408) and the studio (80).

The Cranleigh Arts Centre (flexible seating, varying from 130 to 158) takes small-scale tours as well as presenting concerts, whilst in Dorking the Dorking Halls (801) concentrates on light entertainment and variety rather than drama.

Epsom, famous for its racecourse, has the 406-seater Epsom Playhouse in which the programme is half amateur and half professional. Ewell (really a part of Epsom) has the 231-seater Adrian Mann Theatre, part of the North East Surrey College of Technology. It presents a mixed programme of amateur drama and amateur operatic societies, as well as taking the occasional small-scale tour. In the same town there is the 360-seater Bourne Hall, a for-hire venue.

The Farnham Maltings (in - obviously! - Farnham) is an arts centre with the usual arts centre mixed programme in its 456-seater auditorium.

Frimley Green (near Camberley) has an interesting and unusual venue: the Lakeside Country Club. This is one of the best known cabaret clubs in the country and describes itself as a theatre/restaurant. It books some of the top variety acts in the country but has expressed an interest in the theatre field: drama and dance, it says, "would be welcome." There are two suites in the club: the Cabaret Suite seats 1170 and the Canal Suite 500.

The Leatherhead Leisure Centre mounts various types of events in its three spaces. There is the Tyllney Room/Mariners Suite which seats 350, the Mole Barn (600) and the Sports Hall (1200).

Redhill has a dual-purpose venue, the Harlequin Theater and Cinema. The theatre (494 seats) takes middle-scale national tours, whilst the 100 seat Studio also functions as a cinema.

The largest actual theatre in Surrey is in Woking, the New Victoria. It is a national touring house and seats 1331. Woking also has the Rhoda McGraw Theatre (229 seats) which presents both amateur and professional shows.
