Tony and the Arts Council
Dateline: 27th January, 2008
Tony Blair's premiership has finally drawn to a close and I've been
thinking a great deal about New Labour's election victory in 1997.
How we hugged each other with pride and exhilaration! How we basked
in the warm glow, anticipating that there would, under a Blair government,
be a Renaissance (with a capital R) for British arts. During the campaign,
swaths of celebrity thespians had trundled in his wake, harnessed
to the party bandwagon, no doubt in the genuine belief that Tony was
a friend to the arts. During the first celebrations in No. 10, rock
musicians rubbed shoulders with lords of the realm; artists and actors
quaffed the champagne, toasting the demise of the Tory philistines.
So, what went wrong?
So begins an in-depth two-part consideration of the arts and the Arts
Council during the Tony Blair years by BTG reviewer/correspondent Jackie
Fletcher, now resident in Paris.
The first part, in Microsoft Word format, is now online.
Part II will follow later.
