Among other developments during the year were:

The closure of the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) as a result of financial problems caused by the withdrawl of speonsorship from Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The discovery of The Secret of Chimneys, a hitherto unknown play by Agatha Christie.

Major problems at English National Opera (ENO), which led to strikes by technicians and chorus, and a stabilisation package from ACE, which was agreed in a record 24 hours.

The first live broadcast of a full production from a major London theatre: Richard II at the Globe.

The new Hampstead Theatre opened at the beginni g of the year and then hit financial problems in December, leading to the forced resignation of its executive director James Williams.

Yet another major financial crisis, this time at the Haymarket, Leicester.

Liverpool was appointed the 2008 Culture Capital of Europe.

A London businessman gave £1m towards the Young Vic's rebuilding fund.

Live Theatre, Newcastle, won the Peggy Ramsay Award for achievement in new writing.

Matthew Kelly was arrested and then released with no further action to be taken over accusations of sexual abuse against a young boy.

The Arts Council of England became Arts Council England and gained a new logo.

Alan Ayckbourn wrote his 65th play, My Sister Sadie.

Stratford Circus closed after losing its annual grant from the local authority.

The National Theatre instituted the Travelex £10 season.

The new Scottish National Theatre was announced.

The Whitehall Theatre closed but the Wimbledon Theatre is to reopen.

The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry is to be refurbished at a cost of £10m.

The plug was finally pulled on the Mermaid Theatre.

Sunderland Empire is to get a £4m revamp of its stage facilities.

The Lyric Hammersmith gets a £2.6m refurbishment.
