British Theatre Organisations: An Essential Guide

Please note that these descriptions are necessarily brief and provide merely a basic introduction to each "subject".

Regional Arts Board RAB There are currently ten, each responsible for planning and funding of the arts in their local areas
Government
Department of Culture, Media and Sport DCMS The government department responsible for the Arts throughout the UK. The ministerial head of the department is the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, a member of the Cabinet.
Department for Education DfES Another government department, responsible for Education and headed by the Secretary of State for Education, also a Cabinet member. Its full title is the Department for Education and Skills, for it also has responsility for the development of continuing or life-long education.
Education Action Zones EAZ Particularly deprived areas, which can be inner-city or rural, to which additional funds are given to improve standards in education and to bring about closer links between schools and local industry.
Excellence in Cities n/a An education initiative to channel funds to inner-city schools to raise standards across the curriculum, including the arts.
The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts NESTA A government funded body set up to fund individuals who have creative and innovative ideas in these fields
The National Lottery n/a A national lottery administered by a private company chosen by tender. After deduction of prize money and admin costs, the surplus is given to "good causes", which include the national heritage and the arts. Lottery grants are supposed to be additional to and not replacements for government funding.
New Opportunities Fund NOF A funding organisation for health, education (including the arts) and the environment. Distributes money from central government.
Single Regeneration Budget SRB Money given by central government to local authorities where one or more major industries have closed down, causing large-scale unemployment. The aim is to regenerate the area through schemes involving education, training, the environment, the arts etc.
Specialist Schools n/a A DfE initiative to encourage schools to specialise in a particular area. Additional money is provided for (a) a one-off capital project, and (b) three years general funding. The areas of specialism are the arts, the performing arts, technology, modern foreign languages, sport.
