So Who Is the Greatest?

Dateline: 31st October, 2004

The readers of Empire, a British magzine aimed at film fans, have voted Robert De Niro as the greatest actor over fifty (see our news story for full details). As you would expect - for, in spite of all the efforts to build up the British (and European) industry, film is very much a US-centric art form - British actors are very much in the minority, and those who do feature are the ones who appear in the blockbuster movies. And the bigger the blockbuster (and the more of them), the highher up the list they feature.

As a result the top two Brits are Hopkins and Connery. With all due respect to both, I have to say that neither would appear at the top of my list.

And that set me wondering: if there was a poll of theatregoers, who would come out top there?

So here's your chance: vote in the BTG's Top Actors Over 50 Poll!

All you have to do is send an email with Top Actors in the subject line, along with your choice of the top three, in order, to the BTG. Here are the rules:

  1. Select your top three actors aged over 50
  2. They can be theatre or film actors, male or female
  3. They must still be alive and working
  4. They can be of any nationality
  5. Points will be awarded as follows: no. 1 will get three points, no. 2 two, and no. 3 one
  6. All points will be added up and the one who gets the most will be your top actor
  7. You can only send in one email. Please don't try to "stuff" the ballot box. The last time we ran a poll of this nature, some fans voted hundreds of times for their favourites and that made a nonsense of the poll (although it did our statistics the world of good!). Please, don't do it!
  8. The closing date is midday UK time on 13th November. Any emails arriving after that time will be ignored.
  9. The top ten will be announced at the weekly update on Sunday 14th November
  10. The BTG can't enter in to any correspondence about the competition: we don't have the time!
