My 2005

Dateline: 2nd January, 2006

Well, it was the year I became a reviewer for the BTG, a chance to see and compare some of the best and worst theatre in Liverpool. Highlights had to be the continued resurgence of the Everyman Playhouse; a program that brought a mixture of new writing and classics to Liverpool’s big stages. The pinnacle for me had to be the courageous decision to show Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in its whole, buttock-numbing but spellbinding three hours.

It was a year of emerging talent; the odd stumble from companies who’d shown far greater promise than they achieved – hopefully soon mended – and the dazzling energy that marks all too few young performers as something above the crowd. Unquestionably the highlight there was TV Baby (review and interview), fresh, exciting, passionate, a barely controlled explosion of talent and creativity and most definitely one to watch.

With the Capital of Culture looming, Liverpool is producing brave and exciting theatre work; personally I’m looking forward to a very interesting 2006.
