London Theatre in 2005

A year of highs, lows and in the middle, the London bombings

Dateline: 27th December, 2005

1 - The "Philips".

2005 has seen a revival in West End theatre, thanks to a larger number of excellent straight plays and performances than for some considerable time. No - the theatre is not dead and buried yet.

There are also new theatres springing up and producing great work. Both the Menier Chocolate Factory and the Arcola started life as industrial buildings but now they are building great reputations as successors to the Donmar Warehouse. Maybe we should give up purpose-built spaces for these vibrant and experimental but unorthodox venues. In reality, it is the quality of their artistic directors that makes such venues so exciting.

This year, as I reflect on what has been an even busier time than usual, not only will there be the regular overview, split into four parts but a bonus.

On the following pages, you can read about the pick of theatre divided fairly randomly into

  1. The National, the RSC and the Barbican
  2. The West End
  3. Other Major Theatres
  4. Smaller Theatres

For the first time, the British Theatre Guide is selecting the very best shows, performances and individuals for what might otherwise be known as awards, if we had anything to give away beyond praise and kudos. For the moment, anyone with a fairly warped sense of humour may wish to call them the "Philips".

It will be interesting to see whether these selections spark controversy or generate agreement. It will be very good to hear alternative views if readers can spare a little time over the holiday period to write to us.
