The Full Room (Dominic Dromgoole)
This somewhat controversial book is a survey of modern playwrights, with a chapter devoted to each one. It makes a good introduction to the subject, written from the perspective of one of our leading young directors.

A Good Night Out (John McGrath)
One of my favourite books. McGrath has a totally different perspective on theatre and its audience which the average theatregoer might even find offensive. A must-read, if only to shake any complacency!

cover In-Yer-Face Theatre: British Drama Today (Aleks Sierz)
Sierz looks at UK theatre in the nineties and discerns a pattern: theatre that is "in yer face" and "experiential." You might not agree with all of his conclusions, but his survey of the younge writers of the decade and his interviews (with Sarah Kane and Mark Ravenhill in particular) are worth the price of the book alone!
