Footfall

Footfall is a company formed by three women who met when at Cambridge. They were passionate about staying true to text and wanted to create theatre together.

They did not set out to be an all-female company, but their first and only production so far, which they took to the Edinburgh Fringe, was an all-female reworking of Shakespeare’s King Lear.

It used only his original text but reordered and reassigned so that the only characters appearing were the King’s daughters, Goneril, Reagan and Cordelia, with Lear represented by an empty wheelchair. It became a very domestic drama that was set in Goneril’s kitchen.

The award was presented for this production of Lear's Daughters.
