Links to sites about stage sound

Amek
Amek, based in Salford, describe themselves as the world's leading audio console manufacturers. They produce consoles for broadcast, recording and sound reinforcement applications and this link takes you to their sound reinforcement section, from where you can look at very detailed info about each product.

Allen and Heath
A & H are one of the major manufacturers of pro audio equipment. A very detailed site, packed with information about the company and all its products. A lot of it is very technical, but they have gone out of their way to make it as entertaining as possible, with lots of graphics, animations and even jokes - their newsletter is called The XLR Files! Well worth a visit.

ART
ART produces amps and pre-amps of various kinds, signal processors, EQ, compressors, crossovers, delays and so on. A pretty thorough site, including manuals in .pdf format. US-based but with a UK distributor.

Audio Design Services
Based in Cheshire, ADS deals in PA equipment: speakers, paging mics, amps and projectors.

Pro Audio Search
A huge set of links to all aspects of professional sound (and some lighting), categorised by subject and alphabetically. Very useful!

Bias Pro Audio
(Doncaster) About the company, details of their services (live and recorded sound, post-production and mastering), recent projects, the equipment they use and how to contact them. I like the design!

BK Sound and Vision
Supply and hire. Based in Shropshire. Concentrates on sound and Audio Visual.

The Blue Room Technical Forum
A wide range of UK-based discussion forums about technical apects of theatre: general, lighting, effects and pyro, staging and rigging, stage management, wardobe, props, sound and AV, safety. It's reasonably busy and contains much of interest.

Blue Wave Sound
Based in Wantage (Oxon), a sound and lighting hire, event engineering, equipment sales and venue installations compan

BSS Audio
BSS manufacture and sell audio porcessing products - DI boxes, phase checkers, balancing units, compressors and limiters, noise gates, equalisers, crossovers etc. etc. etc. The site is very detailed with full tech specs.

Canford Audio
A very comprehensive site from one of the country's leading pro audio suppliers. There's a full catalogue of their products, data and standards, monthly promotion details, details about the company and how to contact them. It's a bit slow to load because of an 85k+ graphic, but that's the only drawback of the site.

CueOne
Produces automated audio and show control systems. The site lists its clients and productions in which it has been involved (and very impressive lists they are, too), as well as how to contact them.

Denon Professional
Japanese manufacturer of CD, cassette and cart players. The page is a list of products, each of which links to a separate tech. spec. page. You can also download the full product catalogue in .PDF format. A very basic, almost sparse site.

Diffusion Sound, Media and Theatre Services
Although this would seem to be a general technical link, in fact it deals almost entirely with music technology. Although it does glance at amplifiers, it concentrates on MIDI.

E.Go Show Control System
A show control (lights, video and sound) system using the ACN protocol (the successor to DMX512), which will be available in the winter of 2004/2005. The site features an overview and a detailed tour of the product.

Glantre Engineering
Reading-based Galamntre provides "integrated entertainment systems packages to performance venues around the world." They provide lighting, sound, comms, video, seating, drapes, steelwork and more for everywhere from theatres to TV studios and cruise ships.

Hammer and Tong Software
Although this is a US company, based in San Diego, its Q-Manager is of interest internationally. Q-Manager operates on Windows PCs and is not only an automated sound control system, but it can also be used for all aspects of show control.

JBL Professional
Manufacturers of speakers and monitors. Not quite as well laid out as many tech sites, but everything you need to know is there.

Life Is Music
An online store, the trading name for Solo Lighting and Sound of Nottingham. As well as selling musical instruments, it deals in sound and lighting equipment, although with a bias towards the music business. Lighting, for example, tends to be par-cans and effects lighting. They do sell a wide range of sound equipment of use to theatres.

Maris Ltd and Mad Systems
Show control equipment, solid-state audio replay equipment, DMX lighting systems - most aimed at the disco, nightclub and theme park markets. Useful for special effects, however.

Out Board Electronics
Out Board Electronics is a very specialised company, dealing with sound automation. There are two basic sections: News and Products. One product in particular caught my eye, the SS2, a one-button cueing system for playback of sound control configurations. If you don't know what that means, then you probably won't be in the least interested, but if you do, it's exciting because it seems almost impossible to achieve!

Peavey Electronics
Peavey manufacture a range of audio equipment: this link takes you to the Sound Re-inforcement section, which deals with mixers and powered mixers, processors, amps, speakers and speaker enclosures, and mics. Plenty of general and specific information.

ScotAudio
Based in Stirling (Scotland) and specialising in audio equipment (although it also offers some specialist lighting equipment such as Clay Paky and Martin), ScotAudio has an online store with secure server.

Sennheiser
This is the site for Sennheiser USA, manufacturers of microphones, both cable and radio, dynamic and condenser. There's product news, lots of product details, a list of distributors, job opportunities (for those who live in the US), and Transmitter, a kind of online newsletter with a range of interesting articles.

Shure
A site from one of the best-known names in stage sound. It includes a complete online catalogue. Not the most exciting or even visually satisfying of sites, but full of useful info if you're in the market for sound equipment.

Soundcraft
Like Spirit (below), a British company, part of the Harman group. Manufactures mixing desks. Everything you would expect to find, plus online product support.

Sound Knowledge Ltd
A company based in Newport, Gwent, dealing in musical instruments, disco/karaoke equipment, music, lighting and effects units, performance sound and lighting installations. There are details of the company and its products: most of those featured are musical instruments but it does carry sound reinforcement equipment.

Spirit
Spirit is one of the UK's leading manufacturer's of mixing desks, and they also produce speakers and mics. This site is packed with info, including all their products (and prices), details of sales agents, of famous users, and everything else you'd expect. You can also download a (very good) free guide to sound mixing in HTML or .PDF format, or order it online

Theatrical Music and Sound Effects
Although an American Site, the contents of the first (long) page of this site are just as applicable to the UK - music and sound design for the theatre.

Trantec Systems
Trantec is a British manufacturer of radio microphones which sell at a lower price than those made by the major mic manufacturers. Quite a comprehensive site, giving info about the company and its products, as well as a full online price list, which cross-references with the products page.

UK Sound and Light Community
A resource for DJ's and sound/light/theatre technicians containing a range of articles and equipment reviews, a forum, a chat room and an online store.

Whitesound Audio Sales
A sales and hire company based in Bedfordshire. The site is still under construction so it's not altogether useful at the moment, although it does have its full daily and weekly hire list online.

xta electronics
(Their lack of capitalisation, not mine!) Based in Stourbridge (Worcs.), xta make sound processing products: EQs, Spectrum Analysers, and so on. This is a very standard site for this type of company, the kind of place you visit if you're in the market for their kind of product!

Yamaha Professional Audio
Although the address is a UK domain, the professional audio side is a mirror of the Japanese site. Full details of all pro audio products: the DSP Factory (which turns a PC into a pro digital, multitrack recording and mixing system), mixers, power amps, speakers, signal processors, multitrackers, and peripherals.
