ACE Funding Region by Region - West Midlands

Today Arts Council England, West Midlands announces an investment of just over £141 million to arts organisations in the region over the next three years. In total, 67 organisations across the West Midlands will receive confirmation of their future funding for the period 2008-11 today, including three new additions to the portfolio.

Inflation or above inflation increases go to to 65 organisations.

27 organisations will receive above inflation increases including Stan’s Café, Talking Birds and Warwick Arts Centre.

All of these organisations have been awarded significant increases to reflect the quality of their work which has gained them regional, national and international acclaim. This additional investment will enable them to consolidate and build on their artistic achievements and develop new audiences confirming the West Midlands’ reputation as a centre of excellence and innovation across the arts.

Above inflation increases go to a range of organisations in the Black Country, including Black Country Touring and Wolverhampton Arena Theatre. In Staffordshire additional funding goes to the Borderlines project based at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme for its work with young people at risk and B arts in Stoke, who provide a range of opportunities for engagement in the arts at a community level.

So that investment can reach diverse artists and audiences, Punch, an urban arts development agency will receive regular funding for the first time. Funding has been secured to enable a producer to work with Black and Asian artists based at the Birmingham Rep. Above inflation increases have been awarded to Chitraleka Dance Company; DASH (Disability Arts in Shropshire) and also to Black Country Touring for their South Asian programme.

Sally Luton, Executive Director of Arts Council West Midlands, said, “We are delighted that the excellent settlement we received in the Government’s 2007 Spending Review has enabled us to make bold choices and give increases of inflation or above to 97% of our regularly funded organisations, as well as inviting three new, exciting organisations to join.

“Our strategy in the West Midlands has been to support effective and thriving organisations and we will be expecting them to achieve increased engagement through the work that they do. We have the most developed infrastructure of funded organisations outside London and we will continue to work with them to maximise the impact of their work so that more people in the region have the opportunity to engage with world class activities.”
