ACE Funding Region by Region - London Arts Council England London today announced its vision for the future of the arts in the capital, including the investment of £536 million in regular funding to arts organisations between 2008 and 2011. The strategy is designed to shape and support an arts sector committed to delivering excellent art to the widest range of people, and one empowered to take artistic risk. In London, 80% of arts organisations will receive at least an inflationary increase on their current funding many significantly more than that. Across London, 284 organisations will benefit from the regular investment of public money, and by 2010/11, 33 organisations will receive new regular funding. The Theatre sector is receiving significant additional support to Arcola, Oval House and Hampstead Theatre, while Cheek by Jowl returns to the portfolio. ACE is increasing funding to a number of organisations at the forefront of experimental work including Duckie, Improbable, Told by an Idiot and Shunt, and will offer regular funding for the first time to critically acclaimed Punchdrunk, Marisa Carnesky and Julie McNamara. In total 85 theatre companies across the capital will benefit from todays announcement. The Barbican will also join the portfolio for the first time, receiving funding for its contemporary music programme, along with resident companies Michael Clark Company, Cheek by Jowl and Peoples Palace Productions. An extra £150,000 will be invested in the National Theatre to finance its new Sunday opening programme.
