ACE Funding Region by Region - Yorkshire

Arts Council England, Yorkshire today announced its ambitious vision for the future of the arts in Yorkshire, including the investment of nearly £81 million between 2008 and 2011.

ACE Yorkshire will invest in 109 arts organisations in Yorkshire – including nine new organisations – and 80% of regularly funded organisations will receive increases in their funding in line with, or above, inflation.

Investment will focus on strong and effective arts organisations that will collectively help to increase engagement in the arts across the population, provide greater arts activity in our priority places, and strengthen the visual arts.

Increasing engagement in the arts across the population:

Increased investment to organisations including Eventus in Sheffield, Full Body and the Voice and Primary Colours in Huddersfield, South Asian Arts UK in Leeds, Artworks Creative Communities in Bradford, Square Chapel for the arts in Halifax, and darts in Doncaster will mean that more and different people will be able to attend and participate in the arts over the next three years. We will also be inviting Freedom Studios in Bradford and Diversity Dance in Huddersfield to become regularly funded organisations.

Greater arts activity in priority places:

Investment is increasing in areas that currently have lower provision of arts activity. Increases go to strong and effective organisations including The Gate in Goole, Helmsley Arts Centre, and the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond. QDOS Dance in Barnsley and the New Performance Venue in Doncaster have been invited to become regularly funded organisations.

Investment plans also increase funding to a number of arts organisations across the region with capital developments underway, many of them supported with lottery funds through the Arts Council. Increases to The Gate in Goole, The Art House in Wakefield, and to Hull Truck Theatre, as well as new funding to the New Performance Venue in Doncaster and to The Hepworth Wakefield signal a new phase in their development and will help these organisations thrive and realise their ambitious plans.

Among the biggest increases in funding are Unlimited Theatre in Leeds, Vincent Dance Theatre in Sheffield and Square Chapel for the Arts.

Seventeen organisations in Yorkshire will not have their funding renewed, including Compass Theatre Company, Diva and Yorkshire Women Theatre. Four organisations will have their funding reduced. Fifteen organisations made responses to the original proposals. The regional council considered these and four proposals were altered, including Harrogate Theatre and National Student Drama Festival.
