Record-Breaking 2006

2006 was another record-breaking year in the West End, figures released by the Society of London Theatre reveal:

  • 12,357,153 trips were made to see a London show (up 0.48%)
  • £400,802,809 worth of tickets sold (the first time the £400m mark has been passed)
  • advance bookings £57m (double 2005)

Although some tickets now cost over £60 plus booking fee, the average West End ticket price is now £32, £1 higher than in 2005.

The year began very slowly and, six months in, it was feared that 2006 was going to be a poor year, but then things changed with the arrival of more blockbuster musicals like Dirty Dancing, The Sound of Music, Spamalot and Wicked.

"At the six month mark, the industry was braced for a very tough 2006 with audience numbers – and in particular visitor numbers to London – still depressed from the difficult days of the previous year," said SOLT president Rosemary Squires. "That the industry has bounced back so spectacularly gives us great hope for the future – and a great boost to the London economy."
