24:7 Launches 2010 Event Manchester's acclaimed festival of new theatre writing, the 24:7 Theatre Festival, launched its seventh event officially on Tuesday night with its call for scripts for performance in July 2010 and news of major changes in the way festival week will operate. The slogan for the new festival is "20 > 10 in 2010" ("twenty to ten in twenty-ten"), which holds the key to an event that will, from next year, be as much about helping writers to develop scripts that aren't yet quite ready for performance as helping to produce those that are. Instead of a packed schedule of five performances each of up to twenty plays as in the past, twenty scripts will be chosen for the event but only ten will go on to a full production in the next festival. Of the remaining ten, five will each receive a single public rehearsed reading during festival week and writers of the other five will be offered mentoring to help develop their scripts in association with North West Playwrights. The chosen scripts that aren't produced may be submitted without further charge for consideration for the 2011 event. The requirements and submission process have changed slightly but remain basically the same. Scripts, which must be between 40 and 60 minutes in length when performed and must be in a finished state, will be accepted from 1 December 2009 when full details and application forms will appear on the 24:7 web site and must be postmarked 14 January 2010 or earlier when they arrive. A new web application will go live on the site on 1 December for submission of details of plays entered, but the script itself must still be submitted by post as a hard copy along with the £30 submission fee. Invitations will be issued to successful writers mid-April, the media launch will be mid-June and the festival itself will take place from 26 July to 1 August 2010, with all performances and readings in New Century House, part of the head office complex of main sponsor Co-operative Group. Festival director David Slack told the meeting that over the six festivals from 2004 to 2009, there have been 113 productions by 89 writers, 13 of which have transferred to Bolton's Octagon Theatre, 6 to the Re:Play Festival at Manchester's Library Theatre and three this year to the Young Vic in London. It has won six awards at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards over the first five events and this year has received 12 nominations. David Chadderton
