24:7 Theatre Festival Looks for New Plays Manchesters acclaimed 24:7 Theatre Festival of brand new short plays is inviting submissions from writers for its fifth annual event, to take place between 21 and 27 July 2008. Each year, 24:7 hosts up to 24 brand new plays of up to an hour in length over seven days in non-theatre venues in the centre of Manchester and gives writers the support and advice to be executive producers of their own plays. The organisation behind the festival helps writers to find actors, directors, producers and technicians as well as supplying the venues. All scripts are judged anonymously so that new and experienced writers stand an equal chance of being accepted into the festival. Over the last four years, the festival has attracted the attention of leading local theatre producers and awards committees as well as the local and even the national press, and ticket sales have increased considerably year-on-year. Three of the seven nominations for best new play in this years Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards were from the 24:7 Festival. Boltons Octagon Theatre picked out the same three plays to be revived in its studio theatre, and four 24:7 plays will be featured at the Library Theatre in Manchester in January in its re:play festival. The festival is now looking for submissions from writers or producers for its 2008 festival, which should be no longer than 60 minutes in length and must be submitted in the form of a completed script with an application form before 31 January 2008. There is a non-returnable application fee of £30 per script including VAT, and those who are invited to perform at the festival will be asked to pay a participation fee of £240 plus VAT as a contribution towards venue and equipment hire. Each show is guaranteed six performances during the week at varying times of day including the dress rehearsal on 20 July. Technical facilities are very limited, performance spaces are small and there is no storage space for props or scenery between performances, all of which should be borne in mind when writing a piece for the festival. Full details for submission of scripts and an application form can now be downloaded from the 24:7 web site at www.247theatrefestival.co.uk. The organisers are looking for fresh new work, not plays that have been previously performed or published, although they will accept plays that have been previously performed only at festivals. The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2008. David Chadderton
