Four New Billys Four new Billy Elliots are to join Stephen Daldry's hit musical, two in March and two more in September. All have been trained at the show's training school in Leeds. 12 year old Matthew Koon, a Royal Ballet Junior Associate, whose parents moved to the UK from Hong Kong and who lives in Salford, gives his first performance on 1st March. 15 year old Colin Bates is American and comes from Pennsylvania. He appeared in Cameron Mackintosh's production of Oliver! and also plays the son of Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie in forthcoming film The Good Shepherd. He too joins the cast in March. He was spotted by Daldry at the auditions for the Broadway production but it was obvious that he would be too old by the time it launched and so he was invited to join the London cast. 14 year old Dean McCarthy comes from Dublin and is a disco-dancing champion. He joins the cast in September. 11 year old Layton Williams from Bury, who also joins the cast in September, will be the first black Billy. He comes from Bury and had no previous experience of dance when he auditioned. Ethnicity was not a factor in the casting, Stephen Daldry told the press conference at which the new Biullys were introduced. Charisma and the ability to learn the moves were what was important. Each of them, he added, brings something unique to the role. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
