ACE Funds Springer Tour

Arts Council England has made an award of £30,000 to the national tour of Jerry Springer - The Opera.

This funding will enable the production to reach new audiences across England, giving people the opportunity to engage in the debate which has surrounded the play.

The award underlines the Arts Council's commitment to this outstanding, original production and demonstrates our desire to offer audiences across the country the opportunity to experience the best of UK theatre.

Sir Christopher Frayling, Chair of Arts Council England, says, "We are committed to continuing our association with Jerry Springer - The Opera. The original production provoked an important debate and attracted new audiences during its time on the London stage. Our award will allow the production to reach out to new audiences across England allowing them, too, to take part in the debate."

Jerry Springer - The Opera is credited as being one of the most innovative pieces of musical theatre. It received rave reviews during its run at the National Theatre and went on to win a number of awards including four Best Musical awards (Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics' Circle and What's On Stage) and three further Olivier Awards.

Arts Council England is committed to freedom of artistic expression and supported the development of the original production of Jerry Springer - The Opera. The production was developed by Battersea Arts Centre, one of ACE's regularly funded organisations, to which it also made an award of £20,000 to fund workshops of several productions, including Jerry Springer - The Opera.
