ACE Grants for the Arts Changes

Arts Council England has announced changes to its Grants for the Arts programme aimed at making the application process easier for applicants and saving administrative costs. Eligibility and assessment criteria will not change.

The changes are:

  • Applications will be able to be submitted online. The online process will give support to enure that applicatiosn are complete and eligible: for example, checking that the budget is balanced. The online application process will produce cost savings that can be reinvested into arts activity
  • More applications will be assessed within six weeks. All applications for £10,000 or less will have a decision within six weeks. Currently the limit is £5,000. Applications for more than £10,000 will have a decision within twelve weeks
  • Applications will be assessed by a new Grants for the Arts centre based in Manchester, using their art form expertise and comments from regional Arts Council colleagues and local authorities to assess applications. Final decisions on applications will continue to be made by local teams
  • Awarded grants will be monitored by the Grants for the Arts centre
  • Advice will continue to be given by the Enquiries team and regional offices.

In order to ensure the implementation is as efficient and seamless as possible, ACE will not be accepting new applications to Grants for the Arts for a period of six weeks between Monday 18th January, 2010. and Friday 26th February, 2010. Applications will be accepted again from 1st March 2010.

ACE believes that the changes will deliver 23% of the overall administrative savings required by Government in the organisation review.

Philip Deverell, Director of Grants for the Arts, said, “We are delighted that the improvements to Grants for the Arts will bring huge benefits to artists and arts organisations. Not only will we be able to make significant savings, which will be invested straight back in to the arts, but the process will be simpler and quicker for artists and arts organisations to apply.

“We’d encourage people thinking about applying between 18th January and 26th February to consider applying before or after the suspension period so we can get back to them with a decision in good time.”
