More Cuts in the Pipeline

About 200 arts organisations - about a fifth of its clientele - are facing cuts in grant aid from Arts Council England, it has emerged. In addition to those already announced organisations as diverse as London's Drill Hall and Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre which will lse its entire £448,000 grant. Also in the firing line are The People Show and London Bubble.

A spokesperson for ACE said that the decisions have been made on the basis of "excellence" and that there are "well documented" issues with the companies facing cuts and probable closure.

No announcement has yet been made about the position of the Bristol Old Vic and the future of Derby Playhouse remains very much in the balance.

None of the major national companies are involved, although English National Opera's grant will be frozen for a year and ACE will then resume inflationary increases. The National Theatre is to have its grant increased to fund Sunday opening whilst the RSC gets an increase in line with inflation.

ACE points out that around 200 companies will actually get rises above inflation and 41 will get twice as much as before.

The affected companies have until 15th January to respond to the proposals and final decisions will be made at the end of the month.
