Talawa Loses ACE Funding Britain's first black theatre company, Talawa, has been told that Arts Council England is to withdraw its funding from their proposed £9.3m rebuilding of the Westminster Theatre because it has a series of ongoing issues around organisational weakness, the financial viability of the building project and its artistic and business plans. The ACE grant would have amounted to £4m from the Lottery fund, which was supplemented with £1.8m from the Millennium Commission and further grants from the London Development Commission. The aim was to create a 270-seater theatre with rehearsal rooms, cafe and support for black actors and writers. The money will now, says ACE, be redirected to supporting black theatre across the country. The company said that it is seeking clarification from ACE. It adds that it is determined to stick by its vision of a London home for black theatre but admits its viabliltiy is in doubt now as ACE was the principal funder. Talawa has been operating for 21 years and has been the first rung on the ladder for many of the UK's top black performers.
