Dateline: 1st August, 2004 End of the Line for ACW? The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) could be abolished in radical new plans being developed by the Welsh Assembly. The Welsh Development Agency, the Wales Tourist Board and the post-16 education and training body, Elwa, will be brought under the direct control of the Welsh Assembly Government by spring 2006, First Minister Rhodri Morgan has announced, and it is expected that other Quangos (quasi-governmental organisations) will suffer the same fate. According to the Western Mail, cultural organisations are the next to be taken over, among them the Arts Council of Wales. Other mentioned are National Museums and Galleries of Wales, the National Library of Wales and the Welsh Books Council. ACW had a budget last year of £34.27m, and is answerable to the Assembly, on whose behalf it distributes arts funding, and the DCMS, from whom it receives Lottery money for distribution to arts organisations in Wales. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
