Andrew Loyd Webber

Lloyd Webber Anger at "Libel"

In a BBC TV interview Andrew Lloyd Webber has spoken of his anger over "libellous" press reports that the How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? result was rigged and has threatened to sue. "I don't see how you could fix it," he said. "I didn't know until three minutes before the end of the show."

He added that if there had been any attempt to "fix" it, "the BBC would have been down on me like a ton of bricks."

He also said that the complaints made by two of the unsuccessful "Marias" that Connie Fisher was recording an album during the run of the TV series had nothing to do with the series and that is was a personal project which was totally unrelated to the programme.

He further added that claims that Emma Williams' departure from the production was acrimonious were also untrue. Her leaving, he said, was "perfectly amicable."

Finally he revealed that he was considering a similar programme in the US, possibly relating to Jesus Chris Superstar.
