Visionary Theatre: Classic Plays

In association with The James Menzies-Kitchin Memorial Trust
Battersea Arts Centre: 18th July - 23rd August 2003

Three new plays and a special Scratch Week comprise this season a BAC.

First off is a double bill of Pinter plays - Party Time & One for the Road - directed by the winner of the James Menzies-Kitchin Memorial Trust Award for Young Directors 2003, Bijan Sheibani. Previewing from the 18th to 20th July, this production opens on 22nd July and runs until 17th August.

The JMK Award for Young Directors was established in memory of James Menzies-Kitchin, who staged his first production in 1994. In the following year and a half he established himself as a theatre director of thrilling promise. He was committed to staging classical theatre of the highest quality. When James died suddenly at the age of only 28, the Trust was set up to encourage others to fulfil their potential, as he had promised to do.

Opening on 24th July (previewing on 22nd and 23rd) is mindrocket projects' production of Pains of Youth by Ferdinand Bruckner (newly translated & adapted by Simon Day). It will be directed by Katie Read, up-and-coming director who is currently resident director on Terry Johnston’s Hitchcock Blonde having completed a bursary at the National Theatre studio. It also runs until 17th August.

Due to the exceptional standard of this year's JMK Award shortlist, the venue has invited all finalists to present a showing of their work. These include: Runner-Up Phil Breen, with Destiny by David Edgar; John Terry with Item; Helen Eastman with The Cure at Troy by Seamus Heaney; Chris Rolls with Under the Earth; and Charlotte Westenra with Waiting for Lefty.
