BAC Gets New Lease of Life After facing the threat of closure in early January last year and then being made a last-minute offer by Wandsworth Borough Council, BAC's future is now secure after being given a new 125-year lease on the building, the former Battersea Town Hall. Added to the increase in funding from ACE announced recently - from just under £500,000 to £635,000 for 2008/9 - the centre will now be able to undertake significant development work. At a press conference, co-directors David Jubb and David Micklem, together with architect Steve Tompkins, announced plans to make the centre "a 21st-century performance space in a 19th-century town hall." Included in the plans is accommodation for visiting artists. Other spaces are being opened up for performances - this year's BURST festival, for example, will have 21 spaces compared to last year's four. The Community Assets Fund has given BAC £500,000 which will be put towards the redevelopment, which will follow the lines opened up by the successful Punchdrunk production The Masque of the Red Death which took over the entire building. Ongoing sponsorship has also been agreed with Bloomberg. Future plans include an Edinburgh Fringe residency in 2009 and a festival dedicated to climate change.
