Another Record West End Year 2008 was another record year for West End theatre, according to the Society of London Theatre's 2008 Box Office Data Report published yesterday. The headline figures are that 13,892,460 people (the highest since records began) attended a total of 18,275 performances in the West End last year, raising the seating capacity to a record high of 19,738,414. The Report points out that, as all reports every year are based on full weeks and are not broken down into daily returns, days are lost and so, every so often, an extra "leap week" has to be added. This was the case in the 2008 Report: whereas the 2007 Report ran from Monday 31st December, 2006 to Sunday 29th December, 2007, the 2008 Report runs from Monday 30th December, 2007 to Sunday 4th January, 2009. This needs to be taken into account when making direct comparisons between 2008 and previous years. In terms of performances (2007 figures in brackets), there were 18,275 (17,456) performances and the average attendance per performance was 760 (781), a drop of 1%, with actual seating capacity rising by 555,748 (2.9%). In spite of this, actual attendances increased by 1.9%: 13,892,460 as against 13,636,212. Total revenue was £483,679,423 (£469,938,749), an increase of 2.9%. The gap between the average asking price and the price actually paid for a ticket widened to 21.1% (18.9%). However advance bookings fell by 5.4%, from £58,823,897 (2007) to £55,651,336. A full summary of the report can be found on the Society of London Theatre website.
