Autumn to Christmas in Bristol Bristol Old Vic promises more groundbreaking work with the launch of its autumn/Christmas season. The theatre's artistic director, Simon Reade, says the venue will showcase productions with fresh takes on classic plays, old and new, by some of the country's most innovative directors and designers, as well as plenty to entertain younger audiences. The summer season comes to a close with a revival of Edward Bond's Restoration, a period satire of life above and below stairs, (September 7-16) in a co-production with Oxford Stage Company, followed in October (17-21) by regular visitor's Kneehigh's take on Cymbeline,a recent participant in the RSC's Complete Works festival. Also heading up the new season is a revival of Pinter's early classic, The Birthday Party, which is directed in the main house by Simon Reade (September 22-October 14). There's another innovative look at Shakespeare in the theatre studio (October 5-28) when the Old Vic and Splice Productions bring the Bard into the digital age with Macbeth. Robert Gwilym who co-directs, also stars in a production which combines film with live action. Director/designer Simon Fielding, who drew plaudits and brickbats for his all-male The Importance of Being Earnest last year, returns with an adaptation of Doctor Faustus. Finally, there's two family shows in the form of a new adaptation of The Three Musketeers which can be seen in the main house from December 2 to January 20, and We're Going On a Big Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, which can be seen in the Studio from December 14 to January 20.
